Three David Reid Homes announced in the house of the year top 100

  • Master Builders' “House of the Year” is a prestigious competition showcasing New Zealand builders' incredible artistry and celebrates building excellence. David Reid Homes Taupo, Queenstown, and Waitaki/South Canterbury are the proud franchises to be recognised at the awards this year.

The three houses, which were all winners in the Regional Awards, go through to the National Awards, where the New Zealand champions will be announced on the evening of the 26th of November.

Having won the Regional Supreme House of the Year for Bay of Plenty & Central Plateau for a house built in the suburb of Wharewaka, Scott Hare and his team will be up for the much coveted National Supreme House of the Year at the Gala event.

The double pavilion-style house, which boasts a sheltered deck area between the pavilions, is situated above the shore of Lake Taupo. The design of the house does everything to highlight the stunning views of the lake with ceiling-to-floor windows and doors. The sense of space that can be felt from viewing such a wide vista is not lost inside either, with a superb open-plan living area and raking ceilings.

The house won the regional category award for homes in the $500-750k build cost bracket, a testament to the skills and craftsmanship of Scott and his team.

The second house to make it through to the finals is in Queenstown. The house built in the Hanley’s Farm development was judged the regional winner in the GIB Show Home category and makes the shortlist to compete for the best National Show home award.  The house was built by the team at David Reid Homes Queenstown. As the prize suggests, it is a show home for the franchise and can be viewed Monday to Friday and weekends by appointment.

The house was built with a mixture of schist, timber and steel. The use of top-quality building materials means that the house accentuates its surroundings in the shadow of the Remarkables. The pavilion style of the home means that the high cathedral ceilings allow for a spacious feel, with intelligent use of thermal insulating glazing to ensure the house is warm and bright and the picture postcard views are fully utilised.

Last, but not least, is a large V-shaped, incredibly stylish double Pavillion in Waimate, South Canterbury. Built by Aaron and Nikki McKay and the team at David Reid Homes Waitaki / South Canterbury. Upon approaching the home, you are greeted by the main pavilion clad in unique, weathered steel. This main pavilion contains the living areas and the kitchen that won the House of the Year Regional Lifestyle award.  This means the house will also be vying for a National gong for best kitchen at the awards ceremony later next month.

The kitchen itself is incredibly spacious and includes a generous dark granite island in the middle, with a backdrop of full-length dark grain timber cabinetry.  Within the cabinets is a door to a scullery and, more importantly, the wine cellar, perfect for a house designed for entertaining. The kitchen is complemented by oak flooring that was milled by the owners themselves. Beyond the kitchen is the spaciousness of a combined dining and living area with views of the hills and the two-tier garden.

It’s fantastic to see the David Reid Homes teams' hard work, skill and talent around New Zealand being recognised on a national stage. We wish them all the best of luck as they head into the Master Builders National House of the Year Awards Gala Dinner on the 26th of November.
