House and Land Package in Auckland = Perfect Solution for Solo Mother

  • The search for a house and land package in Auckland’s property market soon turned into plans for a beautiful home design and build project for one working mother in the region.

Claudine Gillies was looking to make a fresh start after her marriage breakup, when she stumbled across the option of a house and land package in Auckland with David Reid Homes.

“I was looking at buying a house, and I happened to walk into an open home where I bumped into Dean [of Key 2], and we discussed house and land packages.”

Claudine was still waiting on her previous home to be sold via auction, but she had a rough idea of what her mortgage would be for a new home.

After discussing her options with Dean, Claudine realised her dream to design and build a home for her family in Auckland was in fact achievable.

She opted for a three bedroom with study home in the new Hobsonville subdivision - Ockleston Landing, which has living areas that can be both open plan or shut off to cater for Claudine and her 11 and 13 year old children.

“For me it was cheaper and more economical long term to build new, and the other benefit of building over buying an existing house is that I get what I want,” she says.

Claudine met with Martin from the David Reid Homes North Shore team and together designed the house with low maintenance, high quality and long term living in mind.

“I need to provide for my family and I need it to be a long term home; I chose Ockleston Landing because it’s close, within walking distance across the yellow cycleway, to my doctor, physio, the supermarket and school bus routes; if I want to retire at 60, it’s all there, and it’s all single level, and low maintenance.”

As a project manager, and former construction engineer with the Navy, Claudine has experience managing construction projects, but never her own.

“I’m quite involved in the whole house thing … I am doing this on my own so I am leaning on Martin and Dean a lot for support and advice and they have been really really good to deal with as well as making it fun.” she says.
